How to Check Tire Tread Depth

how to check tire tread depthWhen is the last time you checked your tire tread? Do you know how to check tire tread depth? Even if your tires are fairly new or if you think you don’t put that many miles on your tires, it’s good to get in the habit of checking on your tires on a regular basis (once a month). Not only do you want to keep an eye on your tread, you want to watch that they are properly inflated, have no bulges, and no foreign matter lodged in or around the tire.

So, how do you check tire tread depth?

Obviously if there are any smooth areas and tread is gone, you need to give your tires immediate attention. If there is some tread left, you can use a penny. Place President Lincoln’s head facing down in to the tread, meaning the top of his head is facing the tire and the other side of the penny is facing out. Now look at the penny, and if you are unable see the top of his head, then your tread is likely good. Look at the image above. You can clearly see all of Lincoln’s head, which means there isn’t much tread left on this tire and it needs to be replaced.

If you have any question about tread life or wondering how long you have to budget for your set of new or quality used tires, you can stop in and have one of our tire specialist take a look.
