Eating Healthy on the Road

Tired of eating greasy burgers and fries while you’re traveling? For some the occasional burger in the car is fine, but travel frequently or take long cross-country trips and many people start craving something healthier. Today on Twitter, I saw a great article entitled “6 Tips for Healthy Eating While Traveling”. The article had some great ideas for healthier eating choices, although those of us with kids may find healthier eating while traveling still a challenge.

Therefore, here’s some tips for families to eat healthy on the road:

  • Involve your kids in planning and packing; let them know your plans for snacking in the vehicle and when they can count on stopping to eat.
  • Let your kids help shop and cook snacks. Letting them make their own sandwiches marked by a sticker on their wrapper increases willing participation in the prepared foods.
  • Make it fun; maybe you usually buy cheese in bulk but traveling is a great time to let them have the cheese sticks or shapes for which they’ve been begging.
  • Pack water bottles with straws or no spill features; we all know how easy it is to spill while drinking in a moving car.
  • Use those lunch boxes. Kids, especially pre-school age kids who don’t get to go to school yet think it’s really fun to eat out of a lunch box, even it is carrot sticks.
